PhD studentships
Department of Mathematics
School of Mathematical & Physical Sciences
We invite applications for 6 PhD studentships available in the Department of Mathematics, University of Sussex.

Supervision is available in diverse topics in the following areas:

-- Calculus of variations and geometric measure theory, Dr Filippo Cagnetti.
-- Theory of partial differential equations and applications to mathematical fluid mechanics (two awards), Dr Masoumeh Dashti, Dr Gabriel Koch.
-- Numerical Analysis and stochastic processes with applications to financial mathematics, Dr Max Jensen.
-- Numerical Analysis with applications to evolutionary differential equations, Prof Charalabos Makridakis.
-- Mathematical Physics, in particular the mathematics of Quantum Systems. Prof Michael Melgaard.

Each PhD studentship includes a tax free maintenance bursary of £13726 per year, plus a waiver of UK/EU fees for 3.5 years.

These are full-time studentships and the successful candidates will be able to devote their whole time to research.
There are numerous opportunities to engage in teaching at Sussex, but this is optional and additional payment will be made.

Award amount:
£13726 per annum tax-free bursary and waiver of UK/EU fees each year for 3.5 years.

Applicants must hold, or expect to hold, a Bachelor degree at first or upper second class, and/or a Master’s degree, in Mathematics, or equivalent non-UK qualifications.

UK and other EU residents are eligible.

Students who are resident outside the EU may also apply, but students should note that the awards waive the fees at UK/EU rates only, of £3900 per year. Due to fees policy beyond our control, Ex-EU students have higher fees to pay, which in 2013-14 will be £13000 per year. Due to resource limitations, we are unable to fund the additional fees ourselves. Ex-EU students must state in their application how they propose the additional funding of £9100 be raised.

How to Apply:
Apply through the Sussex on-line system at
State in the Other Information / Funding section of the application form which of the above research areas and supervisors you wish to be considered for.

Ex-EU students must state on the application form how they will fund the additional fees required, for 3.5 years. We cannot consider applications from Ex-EU students without a clear plan stating how the additional funding will be raised. We regret we are unable to fund the additional fees ourselves due to resource limitations.

Candidates are encouraged to apply, or at least make an expression of interest, as early as possible. The awards will be filled as soon as a suitable candidates can be found.

Possible start dates are 19th September 2013, January 2014, May 2014, September 2014.

Last possible date for applications: 31st August 2014.
