School and workshop: Topics in Operator Algebras and Applications

Sunday, September 1, 2013 - 6:00pm to Friday, September 6, 2013 - 5:59pm

The theory of operator algebras introduced in the thirties by J. von Neumann was developed in close relationship with fundamental aspects of functional analysis, ergodic theory, harmonic analysis and quantum physics. More recently this field has shown many further fruitful interrelations with other areas of mathematics and mathematical physics.

This event is divided into two parts:

The school part (in the morning) aims to train national and international Ph.D. students and young researchers with interdisciplinary interests in mathematics or mathematical physics in some fundamental and modern aspects of operator algebras: this course will address topics like sofic groups and applications to C*-algebras, C*- dynamical systems and crossed products, or aspects of the classification program of C*-algebras.

The workshop part (in the afternoon) aims to present some actual research topics in operator algebras and also in recent research areas where operator algebras have been successfully applied. E.g. in non-commutative Lp spaces, quantum information theory etc. As in previous events, it is also the aim of the organizers that researchers with interests in operator algebras in the wider sense come together and exchange experiences.
