Investigator in Agrarian and/or Environmental Modelling

NEIKER - Basque Institute for Agricultural Research and Development - works to support, promote and contribute to the competitive improvement of the Basque agrofood sector and the conservation of the environment, through the generation of scientific knowledge and transferable solutions that provide wealth and wellbeing to the society, with a highly specialized, committed and motivated team. NEIKER is a Public Research Institute with support from the Basque Government, dedicated to carry out research and development projects in the following fields of knowledge: agriculture, livestock, forestry, environment and natural resources. NEIKER is a member of TECNALIA Technological Corporation.

At NEIKER, 130 to 140 scientists, technical assistants and other members of the different research teams, including undergraduate and graduate students, carry out around 120 R+D projects, with an annual budget of 12 million Euros. Funding for the research projects comes from local, national, European and international calls, with partners from many national and international institutions.

NEIKER is divided into four scientific departments: (a) Plant Production and Health, (b) Animal Production, (c) Animal Health, and (d) Conservation of Natural Resources.

The position
We are seeking a Principal Investigator in the field of agrarian and/or environmental modelling, to mathematically support the different research projects carried out at NEIKER.

• Implement mathematical modelling as a key tool to advance knowledge and innovation in the abovementioned fields.
• Develop modelling programs adjusted to the different research fields at NEIKER, with special emphasis in agrarian and/or environmental research and innovation.
• Apply existing modelling programs and software to the specific needs of ongoing projects at NEIKER.
• Analyse research gaps in agrarian and/or environmental modelling.
• Collaborate with researchers at NEIKER to improve their current expertise in modelling.
• Develop and participate in research projects at NEIKER.
• Supervise graduate and postgraduate (MSc and PhD) students.

Technical competencies
• PhD degree with strong expertise in agrarian and/or environmental modelling.
• Proven understanding of agrarian and/or environmental concepts and applications.
• At least five years of postdoctoral experience in the abovementioned fields.
• Very good command of English language.
• Experience in computer programming.

Role competencies
• Ability to communicate and work with research teams.
• Capacity to work in a multidisciplinary environment.
• Good supervising and teaching skills.
• Willing to participate in national and international meetings.
• Excellent writing skills.

Terms of employment
This is a full-time position based in the Basque Country (Spain), initially for a period of five (5) years, subject to six (6) months’ probation period, intended to become a permanent position once the candidate has proven her/his suitability for the position.
