Jean-Morlet Chair holder
Jean-Morlet Chair positions are open to researchers working in mathematical sciences or theoretical physics in institutions outside France, wishing to spend one semester at the CIRM research and conference centre situated in the campus of Luminy, Marseille, in the south of France.
Each 6-month position and salary is awarded by Aix-Marseille University, after an evaluation and oral presentation carried out by CIRM's international scientific committee and management committee.
Holders are requested to propose a programme of events to be staged at CIRM, organized in collaboration with a local project leader based at Aix-Marseille University or in one of the universities affiliated to the FRUMAM (Research Federation of Mathematical Units of Marseille).
This scientific programme should include one large, international conference ; one large research-school with 50% early career researchers, postdocs and PhD students ; one workshop for 20-40 participants and two research in pairs activities.
These events are supported by a generous funding package from CIRM and other sponsors such as Labexes (French Excellence Initiatives), local university departments, etc. in order to pay for the local expenses of a large proportion of participants residing at CIRM during the events.
The scientific programme is complemented by an Invitation programme - sponsored by CIRM and the City of Marseille - allowing for full invitations that include not only local expenses but also travel. Invitations can be extended to junior researchers, including those based in developing countries, who could benefit from extended periods at CIRM during the semester in question. The chair and local project holder and fellow organizers are encouraged and assisted in finding co-funding from other sources, including foreign support. The EMS, NSF, CMI, etc. have been generous sponsors in several of the semesters organized since 2013.
Benefits for the holder include an attractive salary from Aix-Marseille University (please note that an age-limit applies, indicated on the information website) ; full access to facilities at CIRM, incl. offices and rooms, an extensive 24/7 library, a restaurant, the possibility of renting a house onsite, excellent conference-filming facilities ; the possibility to publish a book with the Société Mathématique de France and Springer ; the possibility to host guests directly onsite and the services of a dedicated coordinator and team at CIRM.
The current call for proposals is for a semester to be held in July-December 2021 or in January-June 2022. Online proposals can be placed on the dedicated website until 20 April 2020. Oral presentations should take place in May 2020.
