PhD position in Mathematics

Department of Mathematics, University of Zagreb, invites applications for one Ph.D. position within the project Microlocal defect tools in partial differential equations, a research grant funded by Croatian Science Foundation. More details about the project can be found on the web page

Starting date: Autumn 2019.

Duration of the contract: 4 years.

Duties: The candidate would work in one of the following three areas of research, depending on the interest and the applicant's background:

  • Development of microlocal defect tools and their applications in PDEs
  • Friedrichs (linear symmetric) systems of PDEs
  • Analytical and numerical studies of conservation laws

More about each topic can be found on the project web page, as well as the web page of the previous CSF grant Weak convergence methods and applications, where the list of all relevant recent publications is available. The candidate will be encouraged to attend schools, workshops, and conferences of interest for which an appropriate travel budget will be provided.

The candidate would be enrolled in the Croatian doctoral program in mathematics (unified doctoral program for the whole country with the centre at the Department of Mathematics in Zagreb) and it is expected to finish the program within 4 years. More about the doctoral program can be found on the web page A light teaching load (in English) could be expected.

Eligibility: The candidate is expected to have a master degree (or equivalent) in mathematics (exceptional candidates with degrees in closely related fields will also be considered), or expect to graduate before 15 July 2019. Preferably, the candidate should be familiar with the basics of at least one of the following: functional analysis, partial differential equations, numerical analysis. Fluency in English, both written and spoken, is mandatory.

Application: In order to apply, applicants need to submit the following documents (in PDF format) to maerceg (at) (Marko Erceg):

  • an application letter in which applicants describe their research interests in relation to the advertised doctoral position,
  • curriculum vitae,
  • relevant course certificates and transcripts,
  • copy of master's thesis or equivalent, if applicable,
  • copies of publications or certificates of other qualifications, if applicable,
  • letters of recommendation or the contact detailes of at least two references,
  • evidence of accepted English language proficiency for applicants whose first language is not English.

Deadline: 31 May 2019.

All questions concerning the Ph.D. position should be directly addressed to maerceg (at)
