Research Associate (postdoc) in Analysis, PDEs & Dynamical Systems
The School of Mathematics invites applications for a 3 year postdoctoral position (Research Associate) in Analysis. This position is funded by The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and is attached to the Early Career Fellowship of Dr Jonathan Ben-Artzi, entitled “Quantitative Estimates in Spectral Theory and Their Complexity”.
The goal of this project is to develop tools to understand the relationship between the structure of spectra of generators of Hamiltonian dynamical systems and rates of convergence for the associated ergodic theorem. It is well known that a spectral gap leads to an exponential rate. However, is it possible to extract a rate when there is no gap? The novel technique to tackle this problem involves estimates of the density of the spectrum near 0. The mathematical tools required include spectral analysis, operator algebras, functional analysis, differential geometry and more. An ability to think “outside the box” will prove extremely valuable.
Benefits and Responsibilities
You will have at your disposal extensive funds to travel and to invite colleagues and collaborators to Cardiff. You will benefit from the proximity to the strong departments at Bristol and Bath, as well as London, which is only two hours away. You will also be involved in the organisation of a major international conference, which is funded as part of the EPSRC Fellowship.
The School of Mathematics
The School of Mathematics has one of the largest and most active groups in analysis in the UK. The group runs an active weekly seminar and regularly hosts visitors from around the world.
Candidates with research interests in spectral analysis, smooth dynamical systems and ergodic theory, and related areas of mathematics are encouraged to apply.
We particularly welcome applications from females as they are under-represented with Cardiff University in this field. The School of Mathematics has an Athena SWAN Bronze Award that recognises good employment practice and a commitment to develop the careers of women working in science. The University is committed to ensuring that we sustain a positive working environment for all staff to flourish and achieve. As part of this commitment, the University has developed a flexible and responsive framework of procedures to support staff in managing their work and personal commitments wherever possible.
